Play to Learn - Level 1
Stepping on the ice for the first time or just starting to get more comfortable in your skates? The Canlan Play to Learn progression model is a multi-level class designed specifically for new players! With our friendly instructors, players focus on staying in motion and on developing a love for the game through interactive games and free play. Our primary goal is for participants to build trust with our coaches and to feel comfortable with the trial and error that comes with learning any new sport! At the Play to Learn - Level 1, players' skill focus includes learning basic skills of balance, multi-directional movements, and an introduction to edges.
Play to Learn - Level 2
When new players progress to the second level in Play to Learn, they'll focus on learning basic hockey techniques through repetition. Participants also get to learn a wider variety of hockey skills through play-based drills and games. This stage introduces skills like stride development, glide turns, backwards skating, puck touches, and carrying the puck. In addition to hockey skills, instructors monitor and evaluate participants on their ability to concentrate, follow instructions, and of course be good teammates.
Play to Develop - Level 1
Gained the basic skills from our Play to Learn Program? You're ready for Play to Develop, where players build the fundamentals of stick handling, passing and shooting. With a curriculum that's split between developing the fundamentals of playing with the puck and using those skills in more engaging, free flowing drills, players get to do exercises that involve teamwork and making plays together. In this stage, they'll be introduced to stickhandling around obstacles, passing and receiving the puck, keeping the hands away from their body, and controlling the puck in motion. During the Play to Develop stage, Canlan Instructors focus on developing participants' confidence and leadership abilities.
Play to Develop - Level 2
In the second level of Play to Develop, players build on key skills through play-based drills and the tried-and-true method of repetition. They'll bring their game up a notch as they're introduced to skills like long dribble, passing and receiving on backhand, cutbacks, and being able to turn away from pressure.
Play to Develop - Level 3
In the final level of the Play to Develop program, players will build the confidence they need to demonstrate fundamental hockey skills under pressure. They'll be challenged in fun skills competitions to demonstrate backwards skating with the puck, puck protection, and wrist shots - all while handling the pressure of the game.
Play to Perform - Level 1
Transition to drills that require players to use multiple skills at once in the Play to Perform Program. Applying the individual skills from the Play to Develop program, participants perform them in a more competitive environment and gain confidence as they transition to full ice games. While competing against others in a positive, fun environment, players perform angling, give and go, and flow drills - all while protecting the puck in traffic.
Elite Conditioning & Hockey Skills
Designed for top-level players, our Elite Conditioning and Hockey Skills program focuses on enhancing your mental and physical ability to execute at your top-level until the buzzer. This program will strengthen AA/AAA level players' speed, endurance, and stamina through high-tempo instruction and enhanced game scenario drills. You'll take on advanced edgework to help strengthen your core balance, work on battling, body positioning, and protection while maneuvering an opponent, and enhance your defensive timing and angling skills. With complex passing and zone entry drills, you'll also improve offensive puck protection, playmaking, and scoring while working on speed, footwork, strength, and explosiveness.
